What Is Oak Wilt?
Oak Wilt is a fungal disease that attacks oak trees and can quickly kill them as well. The cause is a fungus named Ceratocystis fagacearum. Some of the symptoms can vary between different tree species, but generally consist of defoliation, wilt, leaf discoloration and sadly death. Typically the disease is spread from one diseased tree to a healthy tree via connections between tree roots or insect vectors.

How it spreads and when it spreads:
Like mentioned above, the Oak Wilt fungus spreads in two ways: The disease can be transferred from a diseased tree to a healthy tree from insect vectors or through root grafts. Certain insects like sap beetles are attracted to the fruity smells of the mats created through ascospores which then leads them to pick up the disease.
These beetles are also attracted to the bleeding sap of an oak tree, which leads the insects to transfer the disease from one location to the next.
Root graft transmission is the most common way for an oak tree to develop the disease. It is possible for trees within 50 feet of each other to be infected. The disease is simply transferred through roots that become interconnected, called root grafts. Spores have already been produced and they move through the vascular system of the tree, which in the end leads to attacking the healthy tree.
